Board Chairman

Lej Getachew Tesfaye

My name is Lej Getachew Tesfaye, and I am the Chairman of the Board of Agar. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about the culture of voluntarism in Ethiopia. In the Ethiopian context, voluntarism refers to individuals or groups willingly offering their time, skills, and resources to support various community or societal initiatives without expecting monetary compensation. This can include volunteering for activities such as community development projects, healthcare programs, education initiatives, environmental conservation efforts, or disaster relief operations.

Voluntarism plays a significant role in Ethiopia due to various factors such as limited government resources, ongoing development challenges, and a strong sense of communal solidarity within Ethiopian society. Many Ethiopians engage in voluntarism as a way to address social issues, improve living conditions, and contribute to the well-being of their communities.

Examples of voluntarism in the Ethiopian context include:

1. Community Development: Volunteers may participate in activities aimed at improving infrastructure, such as building schools, roads, or water wells in rural areas.

2. Healthcare Initiatives: Volunteers often assist in healthcare programs, such as providing medical assistance in remote areas, conducting health education workshops, or participating in vaccination campaigns.

3. Education Support: Volunteers may tutor children, provide educational materials, or help improve school facilities to enhance access to quality education, especially in underserved communities.

4. Environmental Conservation: Volunteer groups may organize tree planting initiatives, clean-up campaigns, or awareness-raising activities to address environmental challenges such as deforestation and pollution.

5. Disaster Response: Volunteers play a crucial role in providing emergency relief and support during natural disasters or humanitarian crises, such as droughts, floods, or conflicts.

Voluntarism in Ethiopia reflects the interconnectedness and mutual responsibility among community members. It serves as a powerful tool for social cohesion, capacity building, and sustainable development in the country.
